The fetishisation of Japanese culture has been played out through the decades by the West. From "Madam Butterfly" to films like "Lost in Translation", the West's view of Japanese identity is further clouded and fragmented. This is mirrored by Japanese culture itself. Since the 15th century the Japanese have viewed the West in a very stylistic manner, which has created complex and vibrant identities within Japan. Immigration now brings in a further complexity to a culture where everyone is considered to be the same. Japan has strengthened its position by accepting and assimilating other cultures, while differentiating itself from that which it is not.
